Origin and Purpose
In 1863, Switzerland adopted the International Red Cross (cite here). Going off of that idea, Clara Barton, a military nurse, founded the American Red Cross (ARC),originally named The American Association of the Red Cross, in 1881. Barton wanted to set the organization up to assist with military families and warriors of the Civil War. ARC is a nonprofit, tax-exempt, charitable organization (learning to give). Funds donated to the organization are used to purchase supplies to re-build homes, purchase medical supplies, help support veterans and military members, prepare for future disasters, and organize blood drives. ARC collects blood from all over the country. The donated blood is utilized for ill people in hospitals or collected during major disasters, such as when Hurricane Katrina created devastation in Louisiana. “The American Red Cross is the nation’s largest blood collection organization, supplying approximately 40 percent of the blood products used in our country (redcross.org-blood)” During the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, ARC received many donations of money and blood. “On the blood side, it was a case of donations pouring in but little demand. More than 3,000 died in the attacks but a relatively small number were injured (pbs.)” The Red Cross may overestimate the amount of supplies they need. These volunteers can be assigned to a variety of jobs ranging from a search and rescue team to emotional counselors. The events of disaster can traumatize the victims. Doctors and nurses also offer their expertise to give the victims the correct medical attention. ARC offers educational cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and babysitting programs to increase health knowledge for emergency situations. ARC has formed groups of volunteers in every state to reach disaster areas quickly. In recent years, volunteers have responded hastily to the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy of 2012 in New York City and Moore, Oklahoma’s tornado in
