Like the average American, the United States Military and the Red Cross have a special bond, but to a service man or women, this bond is much more. Throughout the history of the International Red Cross Society and the American Red Cross, the need to help military members in a time of need has always been one of its major mission and vision statements. Although there are many ugly faces to war, the birth of the Red Cross came from the need to help those during these times or struggle and sacrifice. Establishing a support structure of volunteers has enabled the Red Cross to reach out help, support, and provide assistance to millions across the globe. The Red Cross is a non-profit organization that serves to aid those in need. Volunteerism is a huge part of not only what makes the Red Cross great, it is how it operates. Volunteers carry our 90% of the humanitarian work of the Red Cross, whether helping one displaced family or thousands, providing care and comfort to an ill or injured service member or veteran, or teaching others how to respond in emergency situations; it is through the efforts of ordinary people that the Red Cross is able to do extraordinary things (Become a Volunteer, n.d.). Volunteering is one way to give to the Red Cross, becoming a volunteer is easy and takes less than an hour to accomplish, but there are also other ways to give to the Red Cross.
