In 1917, The United States was pulled into the Great War. Despite their small size and underfunding, the Red Cross made an united effort in the early years of the war to raise capital, recruit new personnel, nurses, and medical professionals, and gather medical supplies and other necessary treatments. I have always considered my relationship with writing to be very insignificant. Although I enjoy spending time verbally expressing my thoughts and feelings to others, it becomes difficult when these thoughts and feelings are expressed through writing. Throughout my adolescent years, I would often receive feedback for my writing given by the teacher in the form of a grade. Being unable to effectively organize my thoughts and ideas into words and sentences, I would feel reluctant to continue writing confidently whenever I received an undesirable grade.…

You are in class one day when the teacher announces a new assignment: students are to research and give an informative speech about any topic of their choosing. As the student, imagine that you are terrified to not only present the speech in front of your entire class, but to have to go through the process of picking a topic, researching it, organizing your speech, and practicing it as well. At the beginning of my communication class, this was how I felt about producing and giving speeches. I was nervous to talk in front of the class because I have always been very shy and have suffered from extreme speech apprehension. I also dreaded picking a topic and organizing my speeches as well, since I could never make up my mind and I was never good…

The unique element of public relations writing is that it is the attempt to establish positive relations between an organization and its various publics. Other forms of writing, such as journalism, documentaries and fiction are not meant to leave the public with a positive image. While, they can have a positive effect they are used to tell stories, to express one’s opinion and to tell one-side of a story. Writing for public relations focuses on using a written platform to communicate a message. Three activities the class did this semester to showcase public relations writing were when we wrote an issue statement for the allegations surrounding Corey Lewandowski, when we wrote press releases about an upcoming event happening for the student…

“Some dismiss [communication studies] as “fluffy,” or easy” (Frierson, 2012). However, people seem to not understand that a communication studies program can prepare you for a variety of careers. Frierson (2012) states, “In fact, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics lists more career opportunities for communications graduates than any other major, including computer science, engineering and mathematics.” “Communication Studies is a broad discipline that covers rhetorical theory from the ancient Greeks to the latest in digital media.…
