American Politics and 21st Century Problems What has changed in American politics in the last 100 years? There is no single answer to this question. While there have been numerous changes to the political system, one of the biggest problems that has arisen is the polarization of parties. The United States still operates under the same constitution that was ratified in 1788 but parties are not ruled by this document. They are essential to the government today but are in some ways making the government less effective. In today’s politics, if both major parties can reverse the trend of polarization, the government could function in a way that it can be effective at reacting to issues and solve most problems the country faces today. What are the biggest problems today? According to the September 2015 Gallup poll, the top three problems other than dissatisfaction with the government are, the economy, immigration, and unemployment (Riffkin). The economy issue has always been polarized and probably will always be polarized. The opposing views on whether there should be more or less government interaction in the free market will probably never come together. What will continue to happen is whichever party is in power will get their way and if their policies don’t work then that party will be voted out of office in the next election. This system has worked well over the life of the United States. The economy keeps growing on average and the standard of living improves with that.…
