In 1889 King Umberto I and Queen Margherita visited Italy and were tired of their French diet. They asked for a variety of pizzas, Queen Margherita loved the pizza called pizza mozzarella which was later changed pizza Margherita. By 1901 the first pizza documented in the Americas was from New York. By the end of World War II pizza became popular after American GIs stationed in Italy loved the taste of pizza and wanted to have more of it. In Chicago they created a type of pizza that was not the same as the original pizza in Italy which they called deep dish pizza.
