Chapter 17: Henry waits in the trenches in the middle of the battle in anger. He is still angry of the choice that he ran from the battle the day before. Preparing his weapon for the next battle, Henry suddenly heard gunshots go off in the battle and he started to shoot his rifle in a frenzy. When shooting in a frenzy, he noticed that almost nobody in his regiment is shooting but himself. One of the soldiers told Henry that he is shooting at nothing. Looking at the battlefield, Henry sees that the Confederates had fled the battle and all the soldiers in his regiment is looking at him, especially the lieutenant. The lieutenant explains “By heavens, if I had ten thousand wild cats like you I could tear th' stomach outa this war in less'n a week!”

They see it was Jimmie Rogers, one of the Union Soldiers from their regiment. Jimmie continues to cry in pain and starts asking his regiment to get him water. Both Henry and Wilson volunteer to get water for him, but they could not find the water that they needed. However, they can hear another battle going on and sees a whole bunch of their troops starting to battle the Confederates. Among those troops, they see a General entering the battle, and they recognize him right away. The General started to give orders and started to talk to the commanders. The commanders ask the General what the plan of action for the battle. They started to talk about which regiments they should spare in the battle, and the only regiment the commander tells the general that they can spare is the 304th regiment because the commander thinks that they fight dully. The commander also told the general that he would not mind losing them to any other regiments. Both Wilson and Henry started to go back to the lieutenant to tell him the news of what they heard. The lieutenant asked why they took so long to get the water, and Henry and Wilson responded to them that they overheard the General and the commander saying that they are up next in line to go to battle. Some of the regiment thought they were lying, but the lieutenant said that they were right and they started getting prepared for the next
