American Legion Reflection

When I first heard about the American Legion, I was as curious as I was scared. I was expecting tested war veterans who questioned my patriotism. I was optimistic when I arrived at Rider and immediately started talking about my favorite soccer team with a member. I was attending boys state as an educational opportunity into politics and definitely an enjoyable week to start my summer off with. The awkwardness felt around the campus was at a level I have rarely experienced. By the end of the week however, I added 980 more brothers to my family. On paper, my political knowledge increased tenfold throughout the week, but the vastly more important thing taken from the week was my understanding of people and relationships. This was the first time sleeping

This DBQ was about the Continental Army at Valley Forge during the Revolutionary war. The Patriot side of the revolution was was not going so good in the first two years of the war. Some of the men were deserting General Washington and going home because they believed that there was no point of living in miserable conditions when there was little hope of winning the war. General Washington decided to take the troops that he did have left to build a camp at a place called Valley Forge in the winter of 1777.…

¨I don't think I would stay¨ ¨would you?¨ In 1776 the Continental Army was going through a very pugnacious time at the winter camp that was set up at Valley Forge. It wasn't a pleasure to stay at that place at the time, but those people managed to stay alive while being there. In fact, in 1777 up to 2,500 people died due to illness. People didn't have a very good chance of surviving at that time, as a matter of fact, people living at the camp had about 10% chance that they would receive sickness, coupled with wars and fights. In 1776 it wasn't very pleasing to live at the winter camp in Valley Forge.…

When veterans return from military service, one important avenue of return to cilivan life and career is through higher education. By the year 2020, it is estimated that 5 million service members will leave the service and a large portion of them will be choosing to attend college and universities. The post 9/11 GI Bill enacted in 2009 made it much more assessable for military veterans to attend college, by enacting financial incentives that pay for tuition, textbooks and housing. Important differences in culture and perceptual perspectives exist between student veterans and college personnel. Few college students, staff, faculty, or administrators themselves have military backgrounds so they have no understanding of the challenges veterans…

The most meaningful clause in The American Legion Preamble to me is “To promote peace and good will on earth.” This clause is important and meaningful because one of our main problems in America is keeping the peace among our citizens and exemplifying good will to everyone in our everyday lives whether big or small. It is important to remember that our country was at its best when all parties were peaceful and doing what was best for one another. The literal definition of peace is “freedom from disturbance.” We seemed to have strayed away from that as the years have gone by, and it has been proven numerous times in our federal government, in our economy and in our citizens everyday lives.…

The training, discipline, and work ethic veterans receive from the military help them in the path to a successful college career. Having these characteristics set veterans ahead of their fellow non- veteran students who do not uphold these mannerisms. Yet we often read about veterans barely getting by at college, flushing away their G.I. bill, and failing at life. Although previous military affiliation proves to be beneficial, I have learned first hand of the many challenges veterans face while attending college. While in the military, veterans are accustomed to very detailed and structured days.…

Community is important to me. I grew up in a small town where you knew your neighbors, and chances were that you lived down the street from at least one of your teachers. Where every summer Saturday, the entire block would meet in somebody’s backyard- a fire would be lit, and all of us kids would roast marshmallows and hotdogs, and play on the wooden swing-set, playing out stories and adventures. My community wasn’t just a place where I lived and went to school- it was a family.…

America’s veterans should be highly respected and appreciated because they fight for peace. Sometimes they fight for peace in other countries. Other times they fight for peace in our own country. I have some close family members who fought for our country. Veterans fight selflessly to put others before themselves to keep us safe.…

When first applying to my school’s chapter of the National Honor Society I thought little of it. It was a club that everyone applies to, and something my friends urged me to join. I was unsure if I even wanted to apply until the week before the deadline. Although stressful, I worked hard and was able to fill in the application, and turn in something I was proud of. After turning it in…

America's veterans have laid their life on the line in ways only they will ever know. They have survived living nightmares and are left with permanent scars. Some of these scars are easy to see, others are too deep, all are painful. They have come home to emptiness and desolation. Many come home to no home at all.…

When I went on a tour of Virginia Military Institute, I knew that my future career would be combining a Military lifestyle with a computer or civil engineering. My desire to attend VMI started the day I visited the open house trip with my family. After I got home, I remembered how Captain John E. Riester immediately made me feel at home for his shorts introduction to Civil engineering. The school is different and unique with an outstanding reputation for its high-quality education in the Nation.…

It was April 15th, 2013 and I was the 15-year-old, innocent sophomore with a perfect record, sitting in the principal’s office waiting for my punishment. I plastered a fake smile on my bright red face, trying not to let the tears filling my blue eyes get the best of me. My mom always used to tell me that I should rule a small country one day, and I would look at her and say, “What? You don’t think I can handle the world?”.…

It took 5 months from concept to completion of my project to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. As I reflect on that experience, I recognize the life lessons that it taught me. I began by speaking with other Eagle scouts for their views on projects that would be impactful to the community. I decided to help the local animal shelter. Prior to writing my proposal, I met with the shelter 3 times to fully understand what they wanted from me.…
