So they stole from them, and being to make them work on their land for free. Similar to in the novel of Butler's, she shows that whites have a set perception of blacks are suppose to act around them. For example, on pg 30, when Rufus tells Dana to know her “role” on his plantation. Keep in mind, Rufus is still only about 5 or 6 of age at this time, and is accustomed to this style of living. He states “ you’re not a slave, are you?” Dana replies saying “no” by this Rufus now knows that Dana was not own by no one but because of being black he felt entitled to ownership to her. “ you don't talk right dress or act right , you don't even seem like a runaway, ” and you don't call me “Master either.” yet at young age Rufus being to feel entitlement, “ you’re suppose to call me master. He follows up with “ you want me to call you black?” ...This quote effectively illustrate that white people have always seen themselves above blacks, the stature of black being beneath them has always been the dominant divider between the two group of people. Another, point in novel, is that only thing blacks are good for doing are mindless jobs.. (Note: The Fall: sweep floor, wash dishes, stuff envelopes, inventory, etc)
