Imperialism
By the early ninetieth century America had an escalating reputation as a major world power. The United States had obtained this power through its involvement in imperialism, rapid worldwide expansion, and competition between other larger powers. Some larger powers, which include Germany, Britain, Russia, and France. Although, America was a large colonial power, it was not a sudden growth. Although American expansion during this time period was a continuation of past cultural and social values that was similar to Americas past expansionism, it was to a bigger extent that the new economic and political motives were the cause of this expansion. The United States attempted to fill in the world as a world power. Doing so by competing with other world powers in an imperialistic race. In the book, The Interest of America in Sea Power written by Alfred T. Mahan (Doc C), speaks about how America needs to acquire several foreign territories in order to have greater economic interest for America. Several other figures in American history such as Theodore Roosevelt agreed upon Mahan’s beliefs, by wanting to take part in the Spanish American war. Upon entering they saw new territories that they could acquire. Theodore later on expressed in his Annual Message to Congress (Doc F), if other countries are suffering it is the responsibility of the United States to help and maintain the political stance in all of the nations. In Doc. H, it shows how the Constitution n did not “follow the flag” by not allowing, thus showing that the United states had no intention of giving equal status to some
