The grandmother in the short story is called "The Awful Grandmother" because she hates America and calls it a "barbaric place", and because she prays for her family members that live in the United States. The Grandmother speaks Spanish and is very in touch with her Mexican Heritage, when she is at the church she is praying for her family members at a Spanish altar. Since the Grandmother does not like America, she dislikes when her grandchildren refer to themselves as "Merican". I believe that the narrator is mostly pressured by her grandmother to accept and embrace her Mexican heritage.
