The use of the F word and the word sh*t ,even by children was used in every other scene. Nevertheless, they were strategically placed and added a somewhat natural element to the TV show. They even used high sexual language, to let some of the scarier characters get their points across.
Supernatural however is a broadcast show that started on The WB and was syndicated to The CW. This show had very light to no profanity or sexual language. Many of the sexual jokes were innuendos yet never actually spoken. Therefore I was never surprise when instead of listening to “what the hell” ,I heard “what the heck”.
Secondly I paid attention to what I saw and both shows were very different in that aspect ,even though the gore on AHS was so strong. The show had a surprise element that would scare the audience into paying attention, which makes one able to fully get engaged.
I felt as if both shows were effective, however for different reasons. American Horror Story used its leverage, the profanity, sexual language, and gore, to put the audience in a fearful trance. Each swear word was believable because of the situation each character was put in. The sight of a thick dark blood oozing out of a fresh kill was meant keep the audience eyes on the screen as it slowly leaked out.
Nevertheless, because supernatural, being on a broadcast network, couldn't give the profanity and the blood a true horror fan needs, they decided to let your your mind become its worst enemy. From the quick flashes of creatures across the screen, to the build up of music, evidence, and darkness,as the characters search for the things that go but in the night. Each clue the show gave you, helped the audience's mind go into overdrive as they tried to figure out what we're going to be our lead characters next
