Each season has its own story line and each one deals with a different horror that most of Americans feel. Some of the topics of the seasons include murder, asylums, witches, freak shows, the supernatural, and paranormal activity. The show makes an argument about what scares specifically most Americans. They use flashbacks to give the viewer more information about the past and play on more of the American fear. For example, throughout the first season which is titled “murder house” for obvious reasons, continuously uses flashbacks to show previous murders that have happened in the house when the new owners of the house have no clue that the person standing in the room with them had murdered someone in the house in the past. This gives the viewer insight on the past of the character and uses the fear that Americans have of an unknown murder happening in a newly bought, which is typically referred to part of the “American Dream”.
