Tony uses many film techniques to portray the life of Derek Vinyard and his brother Danny Vinyard. In this movie Derek goes to prison and the experience changed his view on black people. The purpose of the first scene was to show how dark and twisted Derek’s past was. For example the kurb stomp scene, where Derek brutally murders a black man. The purpose of the second scene was to show how the Derek as a character has evolved from a black hating, white supremacists to a kind loving brother.

Danny then has a flashback which is in black and white of the night where three black guys try to steal Dereks truck. This Flashback was in black and white to show that it was in the past and that it was not a happy flashback. During this flashback Tony also uses the close up shot used very effectively in the scene where Derek is making the black guy put him mouth on the kerb. By using this shot Tony Kaye was able to show the audience the emotion of the black guy. In the close up of the mans face we can see that he is clearly scared because Derek has a gun to his head and that he has his mouth on the kerb. We also see a worried look on the man’s face as he doesn’t know what is going to happen. This close up gives the audience the feeling of uncertainty which creates tension and it also gives feeling that something bad is about to happen. This also makes the audience disgusted and ashamed because of how another human being can stoop so low as to murder a man by means of blunt force trauma. Tony used slow motion in this scene to

Spike Lee, through his undoubtedly inventive yet obtrusive camerawork, embodies emotional impact. From lateral panning and jumpy camera sequences to his use of perspective, Lee inspires intensity and apprehension. An odd synchronicity between the camerawork and subject matter fosters these emotional reactions and inspires inquisition; the viewer conceptualizes the camerawork to uncover a significance the narrative cannot deliver. The cop sequence retains suspense and effortlessly transfers Flipper’s inherent anxiety; a “voyeuristic” perspective stimulates the former while rapid camera shifts and altering points of view maintain the latter. The scene in which Flipper asks for a promotion illustrates Lee’s emphasis on viewer impact and impression,…

In this sequence from the film ‘Trainspotting’, directed by Danny Boyle, cinematography and mise en scene are used extremely effectively to connect the audience to the main character Marc Renton and his experience of going ‘cold turkey’. At the beginning of the sequence (48:30 minutes) ‘Renton’ has just been brought home from the hospital by his parents following a heroin overdose, and he’s been locked in what seems to be his childhood bedroom in order to overcome his addiction that’s been displayed throughout the film. This scene has the intent of connecting viewers to Renton to show the intensity and unpleasantness of what he’s experiencing in his withdrawal. To begin with, the initial two shots are key in establishing the connection with…

The two scenes that I have analysed are significant because they are both linked by the use of the director 's film technique, which in his own way it gives us an important message. The film techniques I have analysed are the use of editing and mise en scène as well as the connections that both scenes has. One of the main themes of the film is regret and the impact it had on the Derek’s life. Derek has had a dark past which has ruined the relationship with his family and has influenced the people around him to follow his negative actions. Comparing both the first scene and the second we see that the colours of each flashback is different, this differentiates both of them as the first scene is in black and white and the other one is in full colour.…
