The Reconstruction Era The reconstruction period, from 1865 to 1877, occurred right after the Civil War had ended and it was to rebuild, or remodel, the United States in hopes to become a much improved country. Although the military conflict had ended, reconstruction was in many ways still a war. This main struggle was opposed by radical northerners who desired to discipline the south and southerners who, to a great extent, wanted to maintain their way of life. The authorization of the 13th, 14th, and 15th amendment became a necessity for southern states to become part of the Union.
