American Gymnastics: A Short Story

Improved Essays
I’m not the one you would probably notice on the floor, in the pool, or on the court. I started United States of America Gymnastics (USAG) when I was seven years old and every coach I had would tell me I’m not good enough. Maybe they were right, maybe I wasn’t good enough. I couldn’t get a split on the floor, and I didn’t have the strength to finish a simple bar routine and a vault. No one believed in me.
Going to practice one morning, I told myself that I am not the best but that shouldn’t stop me from trying. My coach explained to me if I want to get more flexible and have the strength I need, to work on it everyday. To get my split, I had coaches push on my back so that my legs would be on the floor. Tears would run down the side of my

Looking at the biological perspective of things can be a big reason not only why she became a gymnast, but why she became such a dedicated and gold medal gymnast. One way of looking at things is with biological perspective. Biological perspective is studying human behavior by studying the brain, nervous system, genetics etc. Using this perspective in Nastia’s case helpful. Nastia’s father Valeri was an Olympian and her mother Anna Kotchneva was a world champion in rhythmic gymnastics therefore we can connect that back to genetics.…

As I was, once again, sitting on the bench watching my fellow teammates play baseball against another team. I thought to myself, I loved playing football and wrestling, all of my experiences during those seasons were awesome... and then came baseball season. The only sport which I have grown to hate. As I continued to think I began to realize the head coach completely destroyed my love for baseball. I am like a son to my football and wrestling coaches.…

The events for trampoline and tumbling are trampoline, rod floor, as well as the double mini. Rod floor is about the width of a bed, and the length of at least 500 feet. In the middle of the floor is a straight line that you are required to stay on.…

Reflecting on my years as a member of the Silver Starlites I realize I would not be where I am today if it were not for the influence of my parents, teammates, Starlite parents and my four magnificent coaches, who surprisingly managed to put up with my antics for ten years. It is because of their encouragement and support that I have truly learned what it means to be disciplined, audacious, dedicated, a role model and most importantly a champion. Our competitions came around two and occasionally three times a month, this meant that if I were not home doing my school work I was sure to be in the gym practicing my butt off while my mom repeatedly nagged about how bad my free hand was or that my showmanship and eye contact was not enough, not to mention her eye rolls every time I dropped. It was excruciatingly frustrating to know that it…

For over ten years my average day consisted of four main activities: school, homework, gymnastics, and sleep. While school breaks or holidays may have upset three of the four, competitive gymnastics was always a constant. Three hours a day five days a week with no off season left no room for apathy. During my years as a gymnast, I learned the lessons I am sure every athlete is taught— dedication, time management, and determination. However, gymnastics taught me two lessons that other athletes fail to learn thoroughly.…

I said excitingly to my coach,”I’m good to go.” My coach answered in reply,”Good.” Then I began to do my stretches while the rest of the team was working on their over-splits. When I was done catching up, we had to work on our bridges and our coach said,” Do two bridges for 30 seconds, ten jump-overs, ten jump to handstands, ten leg-lifts, on both legs, and ten elbow rocks.” After doing that tiredly, for a little these than five minutes, we went to the other side of the floor to do our warm-ups. It was then that I had started worrying even more about my roundoff backhand spring.…

Learning how to walk on a balance beam may seem like a breeze for the average gymnast, but for A.J. Kleinheksel’s daughter, Aletha, it was quite the challenge. Kleinheksel said she put Aletha in adaptive gymnastics at Balance 180, to help her deal with developmental delays and a physical disability. “Aletha has trouble with communication and gross motor skills and she is missing tendons in her thumbs, which has really challenged her self-confidence,” Kleinheksel said. These disabilities have made it very difficult for Aletha to do activities that involve balance and using a grip, but Kleinheksel said Balance 180 has helped to change that. Rebecca Thrift, Balance 180’s Special Olympics Young Athletes program coordinator, said children with…

The Lesson in Quitting For the past 7 years of my life, swimming has played a huge role. Growing up, I had always enjoyed being in the water, and was one of the odd kids that genuinely enjoyed swimming lessons, no bribes required (thinking about it, I wish I had some of those kids in the lessons I teach now). Overtime, it began to feel less like a passion and more like an obligation; something I had committed to that was too late to stop. I was afraid to quit, afraid to disappoint, and trying to be dedicated to a sport I had lost interest in made me start to hate it. This year, I finally decided to drop the sport, and am now embracing the huge change it has had in my life.…
