American Girl Doll History
The creation of the American Girl Doll and company was Pleasant Rowland in 1986. There are also a line of dolls that have the same name. American Girl Dolls all have their own story from different parts around the world. The dolls are about girls between the ages of 8-11 from different cultures and perspectives. The story are about different times in history, and today the dolls talk about what there life was like. I did not realize that there was so much about these dolls, I thought it was merely a doll. Rowland has two reason that she created the dolls the first is because, there was a large gap in the making of dolls in 1980 and girls could not play with the dolls that were sold in stores. The first dolls of the line were Kirsten Larson, Samantha Parkington, and Molly McIntire. Over many years 12 to be exact Rowland developed new girls and character lines. These dolls included historical characters, a new baby line, and American Girls of today. After the 12 years she decided to sell the rights of the American Girl Doll to Mattel. She sold it for $700 million dollars. Even after selling she remained with the new company as an advisor until she retires to become a historical developer. The line of dolls came with controversy. The first story Rowland talked about how she found a worn trunk that had porcelain dolls that had many accessories. She found out that the doll was donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society and the story that was used to market it was not the truth. That did not change the effect that is had on the girls over the years. The stories taught the girls to follow their hearts, learn more about the past, and to always be whom they want to
