The Kansas City Chiefs have put themselves on the proverbial ropes the first 4 weeks of the 2015 NFL season, losing 3 out of those first 4 contests, two in heartbreaking fashion. It seemed a welcome reprieve would be the dysfunctional franchise from the Windy City, otherwise known as the “Monsters of the Midway”. The 2015 version of the Chicago Bears resembled nothing even close to your grandpa’s Midway Monsters. The Bears were weak at the wide receiver position, and quarterback Jay Cutler had missed half of the games already this year due to injury. The defense was suspect and the offense even more so.…

The football that we see in the National Football League (NFL) is the same as the Canadian Football League (CFL), but with different teams and rules. In the NFL, a team has four chances to get a first down (getting the ball ten yards), but in the CFL they only get three chances. Not only is the amount of downs different, but so are the amount of players on the field. In the NFL, there are eleven players on the field, opposed to the CFL, where there are twelve! In the CFL, they can fit twelve people onto the field easier because the field is bigger than the NFL’s field.…

Kansas City Chiefs (11-5) at Houston Texans (9-7) What a season it has been for the Kansas City Chiefs. The Chiefs were left for dead after starting the season 1-5, averaging 21.2 points per game over their first six contests. Since the dreadful start, Kansas City closed the regular season with 10 straight wins and has averaged 27.8 points per game over that stretch. Chiefs quarterback Alex Smith and a stout Kansas City defense have been the primary reason for the team’s turnaround. Smith has been virtually error-free this season as he has turned the ball over just seven times while producing 22 touchdowns.…

On August 26th, the San Francisco 49ers hosted the Green Bay Packers for a preseason exhibition game. Normally, there is little attention given to these games because they are played with the sole purpose of evaluating the progress of players before the regular season begins. This game, however, ended up receiving worldwide attention for something that happened before the game had even started. Colin Kaepernick, the current backup-QB for the 49ers, made headlines by choosing not to stand during the playing of the national anthem of the United States. Kaepernick justified his actions by saying that he doesn’t support the nation’s recent acts of police brutality as well as the unequal treatment of minorities.…

Poetry allows for writing to reveal transitional work and in this case the transitory connection between internal conflict and the will to grow. Louis Jenkins’s “Football” serves as a model for this effort. While the poem is about football and difficult choices, it disguises as the internal battles of the speaker as well. A notable take is how Jenkins guides the readers’ attention to the speaker and his confusing decisions he presents as a quarterback. Jenkins has the readers unknowingly focus in on the speaker himself and these odd comparisons and disconnecting ideas within his words.…
