American Food In The Late 1800's

Decent Essays
These days, the average American consumes 130 pounds of sugar a year. That’s about 16 times as much as the people in the late 1800’s! Sugar is extremely addictive, can lead to several diseases, and is immensely unhealthy.
According to brain scans, sugar is just as addictive as cocaine. One theory is that we like sugar and sweet things because the first thing we taste, our mother's milk, is sweet. Another theory is that a fondness for sweetness helped early humans. Sweet-tasting foods like berries, plums, and grapes provided them with the energy they needed to survive. The average American eats 130 pounds of sugar a year. That’s equivalent to 1,767,900 Skittles! Sugar won’t stop eating us until we stop eating it.

Sugar is a substance that is used in most of our sweets, drinks and more and is evidently becoming more popular by the day. Introduction and basic explanation – why have we evolved to like sugar? Humans are, essentially, smart primates. Our monkey ancestors survived – and still do – off fruit found among the trees, and when large groups of apes live together in the same area of forest or jungle, there isn’t heaps of food to go around. And if there isn’t much to eat, it would make sense to try and get as much as possible out of as little as possible.…
