American food journalist, Mark Bittman, writes about the topic of Americans eating highly processed foods because it is cheaper. He believes that healthy home cooked food is no more expensive than eating junk food. “The ‘fact’ that junk food is cheaper than real food has become a reflexive part of how we explain why so many Americans are overweight” (Bittman 661). Eating home cooked meals is indeed cheaper than going out. Home cooked food fills our body with healthy calories for a cheaper price than junk food. Overall, eating home cooked meals is the best way to save money and to eat healthy. Mark Bittman argues that junk food is not cheaper than healthier food. The trend of fast food being fast and cheap is not going anywhere. “There are five fast-food restaurants for every supermarket in the United States” (Bittman 661). It turns out cooking a home cooked meal is cheaper than purchasing fast food. Bittman then describes that going from junk food to healthy food does not have to be a hard, drastic change. When eating out at restaurants, simple substitutes go a long way. Substitute fries for a fruit, or instead of drinking soda drink water. Overall, eating junk food is not cheaper eating home cooked meals is the best way to save money when it comes to food.
