The flamingos that we observed at the zoo were American Flamingos. American Flamingos are a large species that are related to the greater and Chilean flamingo. They breed in the Galapagos, Coastal Columbia, venezuela, and nearby islands. The life expectancy for flamingos is one of the longest in birds, about forty years. There are over 40 American Flamingos currently held at zoo Miami, mainly being fed brine shrimp and blue-green algae. Flamingos are a type of wading bird in the family Phoenicopteridae. The birds get their vibrant pink color from carotenoid proteins found in their diet of plant and animal plankton. Flamingos are actually capable to fly but when being held captive for example in this case at a zoo their wings are clipped
