Gaining acceptance in life is what everyone in this world wants. It is something that all people strive for. They work hard to feel as though they fit in because no one wants to be different. Sometimes that can be hard when people have different thoughts or beliefs. Individuals view acceptance as a widely-known topic that all people face. This is why authors, all over the world, incorporate it into their work. “American Flag Stands for Tolerance” by Ronald J. Allen provides the idea of acceptance through the burning of the American flag. In Ursula K. He explains to the readers how the flag is a symbol of freedom, and the fact that many people believe it should be illegal to burn. He makes the connection between the freedom of speech in the Bill of Rights to being able to burn the flag as an act of protesting. The Supreme Court later decided that a “person has a right to express disagreement with governmental policies by burning the American flag” (Allen 18). The author later states that he believes the Supreme Court made the right decision. Due to the outcome of the case, many people were infuriated. They did not want to accept the idea of people disrespecting their country, and their ability to get away with it. Allen believes that our society needs to accept other ideas, even though they do not agree with their opinions. He says, “More than anything else, the flag stands for free expression of ideas, no matter how distasteful.” (Allen 20).
