It is a difficult dream for the European upper classes to interpret adequately, and too many of us ourselves have grown weary and mistrustful of it. It is not a dream of motor cars and high wages merely, but a dream of social order in which each man and each woman shall be able to attain to the fullest stature of which they are innately capable, and be recognized by others for what they are, regardless of the fortuitous circumstances of birth or position." (p.214-215) Since then the people of America have strewn the idea of the American Dream. As time passed people became more and more focused on a materialistic dream, one that is full of false hopes. In the poem, Cory goes to town and all of the people look at him. They long to be like Richard Cory because he is so wealthy. The narrator talks about the characteristics of Cory and how he “was a gentleman from sole to crown, clean favored, and imperially slim.” Throughout the poem Cory seems as if he loves his life. At the end of the poem Robinson wrote “And Richard Cory, one calm summer night, went home, and put a bullet through his head.” This poem shows the irony of a rich man’s life. The poor couldn't find a reason as to why Cory killed himself because they thought he had everything a man could ever want. This poem shows that the rich aren’t always happy and that the poor see wealth as the key to happiness. The poor in this poem could represent the population of the United States that long to be the 3% of the population that were mentioned earlier. This poem also represents the strewn idea of the American Dream, that wealth is key to happiness.
