This had a huge impact on him because it led to his decision to take formal dance lessons with Lester Horton as the door to his foreseen future in dance. He was hugely intrigued by a dance he saw at the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo Dance Company perform and this inspired his dance debut. As a student of Lester Horton, after seeing Katherine Dunham’s Dance Company, an all-black dance troupe, Ailey then had a dream – to head his own dance troupe. Ailey trained at the Lester Horton Dance Theatre since 1950 after being personally recruited by Horton for being ‘the next big thing’.…

Jerome Robbins was known as one of the great choreographers of all time, as a genius, as a friend to the rich and famous (and, indeed, “one of them”: He danced with Lauren Bacall at Truman Capote’s Black and White Ball), as one of the four closeted gay Jewish men who made West Side Story , as a person who enjoyed humiliating young male ballet dancers during rehearsals and referring to some of the female ones with the four-letter word that begins with a “c,” as an informer, and as co-founding choreographer, with George Balanchine, of the New York City Ballet. Any man known for so much must have been a great man or a great scoundrel, or both. When I came to New York in 1988, Balanchine was already dead five years, but Jerry Robbins and City…

Chapter 1 Technique George Balanchine, upon a basis of classical foundations, created his own technique by challenging small elements of the basic ballet technique to give his style its own individuality. He focussed on; emphasising the hips, ‘broken’ wrists, big displaced arabesque extensions, fast footwork and working in parallel. These values are some of those that the School of American Ballet were founded upon. This was so that there could be a direct feed of dancers in to Balanchine’s company that were familiar in his style. Sanjoy Roy commented on how he believed that “ he (Balanchine) changed the image of the ballerina from a graceful fairy into a sleek greyhound.”…

The music starts and a dozen little girls and boys start twirling and craning their necks to watch their dance instructor coach them from the wings. A friend of a friend told them about "Dolly Dinkle's Dance Academy" and so they signed little Susie up,bought her a pink leotard, and told her to have fun at dance class. However, "Dolly Dinkle" is not a qualified dance instructor.…

With this ability she could perform for years. The Royal Ballet, which I don't get a chance to see very often, seems to have a theatrical strength, perhaps coming from that part of the world's great literary and theatrical traditions.…

In the two totalitarian societies, Soviet Russia and Nazi Germany, politics and the arts were prevalent. In both countries, a strict one ruler government was formed in the 18th and 19th centuries.
