Southern culture is often very traditional and often places a lot of value on the family. When Katrina hit New Orleans and Mississippi, The people didn’t want to abandon their homes and families, but there were also other reasons. For one, some of the people in New Orleans especially had no way of actually evacuating. Either they heard the warning too late and were stuck or they didn’t have transport out of the city and the traffic was too much for them. In some cases, hospitals and nursing homes had no way to move all of the people staying there, so they were stranded when the storm hit.
