In the book Quinn walks to jerry’s and witnesses his friends older brother Paul, who he considers as an older brother, beating a black teenager to the ground in a parking lot. In the text, it states “I swear I thought about the guy on the ground, but mostly I thought about Paul, because Paul was Guzzo's older brother, and after my own father died, Paul had basically been my older brother too. And I couldn't shake that look of Rage I've seen on the face of a man I knew and thought of as family”(40). This shows the experience that Quinn is witnessing happen right there in front of him. This is a window to me because I have never experienced this type of scene before but it helps me become a better reader by helping me understand what Quinn is going through and it will help me understand other decisions in the future because of the experience that he had in that parking lot. Another window that is demonstrated by Quinn, is when he was confronted with tanks and police officers in riot gear on the street on the day of the protest. In the text, it states “Oh my God! I can't do this. I can't do this! Tank? Freaking tanks are coming down the street. When we read books that have characters that we can relate to, it can help us in lots of ways in our lives and our views towards the characters in the book. Mirrors can help us in life by letting us know that there are more people in the world that feel the same way as I do in certain situations, and it can help you understand a character by making you realize that the character is like you so its decisions can be like yours. Windows are also important because it can help you be a better reader by letting you peek into the characters life and identity and it can also help you be a better person by helping you find a new way to react to a situation. All people should do this because it can help them break stereotypes and see other people from another perspective and try to see them in many different ways, and not from other
