Born Chinese” The world we live in is filled with different countries with different cultures. Here in
America there is a vast mixing pot of varies ethnicities and cultures. With all these different races and cultures it may be hard to just be one’s self. In the book, “American Born Chinese” published by First Second Books in 2006, author Gene Luen Yang writes about a boy Jin Wang, an American-Chinese boy who wants to fit in. The book also takes a look at two other characters and how their struggles are different from Jin Wang, yet are very much the same. They must all find their true form. The statement I pose that Gene Luen Yang is making to others in his book is to be yourself and to be proud of your culture, for if you change you will lose something that is part of your identity.
The message delivered in Mr. Yang book is to be yourself is true for all people whether young or old. When you are different than the majority of people around you, it is hard to be happy to be one’s self. The book explores how when one is different there may be stereotypes assumed to be true just by the way you look. People may work very hard to blend in and to not be looked at as being different. In the book Jin Wang is struggling to find his identity in America due largely to his culture and this makes him an outsider. Although most people around today are different from each other. He wants to blend in and to be considered as normal as the other white students. This lead Jin to want to be different from who he really is, yet he knows he is already different. While this also leads him to have self hatred for himself and for his heritage. People will sense they must transform themselves in some way in order to be accepted and noticed by their peers.
