Environmental Issues In order to remain competitive in their respective industry, a business must be aware of and be able to assess the environment in which they operate. The automotive industry in America is extremely competitive; because of this, automotive companies face many challenges. Many of these challenges can be found in the industry’s global competition, new technology, environmental concerns surrounding vehicle emissions, and consumer opinions and demographics.
Global Competition With hundreds, if not thousands, of vehicle brands for consumers to choose from, the global competition in the automotive industry is a very real and serious threat. American auto makers like Chevrolet, GMC, Cadillac, Ford, and Dodge abound in the United States, but so do foreign auto makers like Toyota, Subaru, Audi, Kia, and Hyundai. A review of top vehicle brands, both foreign and domestic, performed by Jon Linkov, found that German auto maker Audi produced the best vehicles (2016). To determine which brands produced the best vehicles, he looked at road-test performance, reliability, safety aids and their performance, and owner satisfaction. The top ten brands on the list are all foreign, except Buick which ranked seventh. The list of top-selling cars in the United Sates so far in 2016 is led by Japanese auto makers Toyota, Honda, and Nissan who each have a claim on one or more of the top five spots.
