It is a healthcare worker’s job to know how to handle their diverse patients. Each patient might have different cultures that the healthcare worker should either know already or should inquire about with the patient if possible. Cultures are different from each other and this can prove difficult in a healthcare system when nurses and doctors are trying to bring people to health; requiring perhaps to need to touch the patient in a way they might not be used to. Here are four barriers that Vietnamese Americans might have when using the healthcare system and East Indian Hindus’ unique beliefs about touch that can influence their reactions to healthcare workers.

The best way to cater to these language barriers are to have a bilingual interpreter to make the patient feel as comfortable as possible. In a survey catered to Chinese and Vietnamese Americans who know a limited amount of English, many were dissatisfied with the quality of interpreters provided (Ngo-metzger et al., 2003). Some of the questions included were: Was there access to professional, culturally appropriate interpreters? Was there adequate time spent with the interpreter? Was the interpreter gender concordant for sensitive issues? Were the treated with respect by the interpreter? Were the translations complete and accurate? All of these questions were answered with a no (Ngo-metzger et al., 2003). Healthcare workers need to work with the patients to provide them with the best possible interpreter and work with them to treat them with the proper care and respect. Patients prefer to have professional interpreters who can accurately translate medical terms to the doctor to receive the proper care, compared to using their children or family members who might not know how to translate some of the medical
