The federalist had a strong opinion on why they wanted the British to be the alliance. They admired Britain because of its stability and distrusted France because of the violent changes that would eventually follow the French Revolution. The Democratic-Republicans wanted the US to be aligned with the French. They supported the French and condemned what they regarded as the Washington Administration's Pro-British policies. Washington admired Hamilton and made policies that Hamilton recommended that showed that Washington was in favor of protecting Britain and making it the US ally. The Democratic-Republicans saw that it wasn't fair and tried everything they could to show Washington that France was a better ally.
To start off Adam’s representatives negotiated an agreement with France in September 1800 that ensured peace. The agreement made sure that France wouldn't go against the US and that they would make things peaceful in France after the revolution was over.
