September 11, 2001, A day in history that will always be remembered as one of the most shocking and devastating days ever experienced in the United States. 8:45 A.M., American Airlines Flight 11 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center instantly killing, trapping, and injuring hundreds of people. Eighteen short minutes later, United Airlines Flight 175 comes plunging out of the sky towards the south tower of the World Trade Center where the investment banking firm Sandler O’Neill is located on the 104th floor. Over 3,000 people are killed during this attack, including one-third of the workforce for Sandler O’Neill. This relatively small firm is immediately thrown a curve ball in these attacks and shows the world how it rebuilds itself in remarkable ways mostly due to a man named Jimmy Dunne. On September 11, 2001 Sandler O’Neill lost 66 of its 171 employees. Among the 66 who died were two of the three senior officers who managed the firm: Herman Sandler, co-founder of Sandler O’Neill, and Christopher Quackenbush, head of investment banking. Both of these men were not only a big part of the company but also a big part of Jimmy Dunne’s life. Herman Sandler had been one of Jimmy’s mentors when he was just starting out and Christopher Quackenbush was someone who Jimmy thought would be a best friend for life.
