“‘ Is it a bird!?’ ‘Is it a plane?!’ ‘IT’S SUPERMAN!’ ‘No it really is a plane?’” This famous advertisement was used in news headlines around the United States referring to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. On this day Islamic terrorists hijacked American flights and attempted to attack several US business buildings. American Airlines 11 and United Airlines 175 hit the North and South towers of the World Trade Center, American Airlines 77 took out the Pentagon, and in attempt to go to Washington D.C., United Airlines 93 was taken down in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The terrorists, as they would like us to think, did not only take down business buildings, “they” also took down the United States economically, militarily, and socially. It all started on plane AA 11, the first plane hijacked in more than a decade. Nineteen Islamic terrorists, part of the group al-Qaeda, were split between four American planes. Fortunately, only three of the four planes made it to their destination. The hijackers used planes with full tanks to create more destruction. They also used threats such as mace and boxcutters to gain control of the plane. The four attacks happened simultaneously within one hour. Flight AA 11 hit the South Tower of The World Trade Center tearing wingtip-wingtip from the 93rd floor to the 99th floor. UA 175 was then immediately directed to stay as far away from AA 11’s path as much as possible. Little did they know, it was too late. UA 175 hit the North Tower…
