A job that pays minimum wage is hardly enough for someone living on their own, let alone someone who plans to have a family one day. In order to avoid the struggle of living on minimum wage and to have a chance at the American dream, American’s must attend college and get a degree for the field they wish to work in. That would not be all that bad if college did not cost an arm and a leg to attend. All joking aside, college is expensive and leaves many drowning in debt, which makes it that much harder for American’s to grasp on to their dream. In a survey conducted for young college students, “24 percent defined the American dream as ‘not being in debt.’ They’re not trying to get ahead. They’re just trying to get to zero” (McClelland 553). Many students who graduate college have a hard time finding a good paying job right away and this makes it tough to pay off their school loans and get started on their dreams. It is sad to see how much the dream has changed.
