Some criminologists suggest that removing large numbers of people from communities is harmful to them. The United States is still a heavily segregated nation both racially and economically. Minorities are charged more frequently and more harshly than their white counterparts. They also tend to come from poorer communities. When they are removed it damages the community by tearing apart families and keeping communities from getting close. When released from prison the ex prisoners will return to their frequently poor communities and be in a situation where they are likely to commit crime again and end up incarcerated again. It makes me think about the irony of a system which is supposed to protect those who follow the rules and punish those who break them can be damaging to those it should keep safe. The source sought out to show how simply putting people in prison en masse isn’t a solution which magically fixes everything. This is in direct contrast to the article “Does Prison Work?”, by Billante and Saunders. This provides the most direct counter argument to simply looking at more people being incarcerated dropping the crime rate.
Conclusion
Doing this research led me to being much more informed on my topic than I was before. I was already strongly opinionated in favor of my argument, but I feel as if I now possess the knowledge to back up my gut feeling and not have to second guess myself. The articles provide me with everything I need to make my argument. There are more statistics out there which could support my argument, but they would point to the same answers as what I have already uncovered.
