America The Greatest Country

America is not the Greatest Country is the first episode of HBO’s new television series The Newsroom. A news anchor, Will McAvoy, is seated between a strong liberalist, Susan, and a conservative, Lewis, on a journalism panel. When asked to describe why America is the greatest country from a student in the audience the anchor envisions someone in the audience using cue cards telling him, “It isn’t.” This persuades him to give his true opinion, and the anchor continues with a speech about why he feels this way. Will McAvoy uses bipartisan journalism to give the audience the impression that his approach on the subject is unbiased to distract them from his anti-American argument.

The moderator allows a person from the audience to ask the question rather than himself so there will be no question he is using a bias approach. When asking their question each person gives their name and year in college. Sharon and Lewis respond with very broad answers such as; diversity, opportunity, freedom and freedom. Before giving his answer to the student’s question Will insults both the liberalist and conservatives answers to again remain objective to both parties. After doing so he then continues to insult the student who asks the question by calling her a “sorority girl”, and adding, “If you happen to wander into a voting booth.” By saying this he offends not only the student, but any girl in a sorority by inferring that because they are in this group, they do not vote. McAvoy uses the technique of belittling those around him in order to make his answer seem more correct than their

In John Lewis’ speech, he uses a strong but formal tone when asking the public rhetorical questions (para 6). These questions are used to show the public that the political party will not take their side and instead will treat them the same. Lewis used these questions to show the injustice he sees, that they don’t have protection against the discrimination that others have applied to African Americans. According to Lewis “Where is the political party that will make it unnecessary to march in the streets of Birmingham? “The essence of Lewis’s argument is that they don’t have someone to help them with their stand.…

America: Imagine The World Without Her by Dinesh D’Souza is centered around the idea of all the things that America has robbed people of. The film is not criticizing America or stating how America is a horrible place because Dinesh D’ Souza consistently said in the beginning of the film how he loves America, but he just does not agree with some of the things about how America came to be. He is in fact “shaming America” like scolding a child after a child has done something wrong. The film is not opinion based, but is in fact, fact based much to my surprise. All of his information was from facts, but he made the matter more political by delving deeper into the subjects.…

Provocateurs are important A better goal than “being able to ignore the provocateurs”, would be learning from them, strengthening your own opinion and voice. Of course, the correct response to a controversial statement is not rioting and violence. However, it is even more unhelpful to be unwilling to listen. Costello’s ideal about not provoking anyone simply leads to wrapping a bubble around students and creating intolerance for free thought.…
