Dear America,
“There is absolutely no evidence to support the statement that ‘America is the greatest country in the world.’ We are 7th in literacy, 27th in math and 22nd in science…The only thing we lead all the nations in is highest number of incarcerated prisoners. The first step to solving any problem is recognizing that there is one…” Believe it or not the actor, Jeff Daniels, from Dumb and Dumber, makes that statement in the show he starred in most recently, The Newsroom. The 1960s introduced the education wars and how dolefully we have fallen behind. Our system of higher education exercises a major part in this ongoing downfall. Our government currently has a system of regulations on just about everything: trade, television, food, why not college cost?
If college universities were regulated just like everything else in this country we would all not only eventually get over it, but all benefit from it. There could be a limit on tuition rates. The government could regulate college universities much like they do chemicals in food. If a crop is given an overdose of chemicals the outcome can be fatal, but not given enough and half will not even grow while the other half will be bug infested and uneatable; being virtually useless. Forget the war on education not only would those percentiles raise, but the unemployment rate would drop substantially because we would have more qualified people everywhere you look. More teachers, more nurses, more doctors. A majority of nurses…
