America Is Freedom To Me

Improved Essays
America has always been described as the freedom to choose. But have you ever thought, “ Maybe America means more than we think.” It’s not just our independence that makes our country the terrific home that we know; it’s the people in it that make it so wonderful. Those people had to have courage to dream, determination to never, ever, give up, and full dedication to their cause. Without them, we wouldn’t have our glorious freedom. They are the warriors that stopped our country from falling and brought us to the America we know today. Martin Luther King Junior once said, “We must accept finite disappointment, but never lose infinite hope.” And he was right. Many people told him he was dumb, stupid and to stop trying, but he didn’t stop.

Many Americans today take the privileges they are given for granted. Rarely do citizens of the United States reflect and truly appreciate how such an unlikely circumstance became a wonderful reality. Americans must understand how such a great nation succeeds despite the odds against it. The United States of America, a nation built on improbable foundations, is able to succeed through uniting people under a common goal, and by being tolerant of different people; this is exemplified through the strong symbolism, persuasive pathos, logical logos, and descriptive diction present in A Quilt of a Country: Out of Many, One?, and Lincoln’s Second Inaugural Address.…

The United States of America: “The Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave,” as noted in Francis Scott Key’s, The Star Spangled Banner. But does America really justify this claim? During the early 19th century, America had seen hope, independence, and freedom. In fact, the “Declaration of Independence” epitomizes all three of these aspects. The “Declaration of Independence” granted the 13 original colonies freedom from Great Britain.…

To begin, let’s remember back, let’s search our reminiscings, our memories, for traces of a scenario in which the tree of liberty to which Americans shed their blood, sweat, and tears was still fledgling, when its branches were in the beginnings of flourishes than would grow to shade and shelter the world. A time when life was synonymous with oppression and the struggle to lift free of that dread shadow that stretched from across a wide, wide ocean was more than threats and news stories, more than sporadic strikes. When red was for red coats, more than a color on our star-spangled banner, before we had a star-spangled banner. Remember—no, imagine—that, because that’s all most can do. Because it’s not the most that give their futures to the few, it’s the few that give their futures to the most.…

America is the land of the free, because of the brave. Americans enjoy many freedoms because of the democracy our ancestors fought very hard to establish. Freedom summarizes what being an American is about, but it’s not what an American is. An American is someone who is brave enough to do something even though the punishment is severe, someone who sees opportunity and stops at nothing to achieve it, and someone who doesn’t take the easy way out. Bravery is part of the definition of an American.…

America, since the beginning, has experienced an overwhelming sense of hope and optimism which has driven its citizens to becoming better not only individually, but also as a whole. This optimism has been derived from hope, and combined with optimism, one finds the American dream. However, dreams are somewhat opinionated and history has taught that one individuals dream could very well be another ’s nightmare. Nevertheless, in Foners Voices of Freedom four prominent individuals not only from the United States, but from around the world try to shine light on dreams that are often left in the dark.…

“This land is your land, this land is my land, from California to the New York Island, from the Redwood forests to the Gulfstream waters, this land was made for you and me” (Guthrie). Contrary to the lyrics in “This Land is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie, this land was apparently not made for “you and me.” America was only made for the “me” aspect of the song, “me” being the Americans. If there is one universally known idea about the United States, it is liberty. Among many of the opinions formed about America, the one that we are one of the few nations to have true liberty is quite probably the most positive. Inside America however, the actual notion of liberty has undoubtedly had a shift over the course of its history. From colonization to revolution to modern times, every era has had a small difference in how liberty was viewed and established. Presently, in modern times, where there are seemingly no restrictions on freedom despite race, gender or religion, the spirit of liberty is the most changed.…
