Exploring Children's Consumption Of Fast Food

Improved Essays
We need to talk about fast food. America is fat. In fact, I have a friend who is fat. She is not just fat, she is obese. However, she did not realize she was obese until just last year. My friend had known that she was overweight, but her entire life changed last fall at her yearly check up. As her doctor walked into the clinic, she knew something was wrong the second she saw his face. He sat her down and gave her some of her test results. Her entire life changed as he dropped the dreaded “O” word. Obese. The diagnosis “obese”, is something no one ever wants to hear. My friend got this way because she eats fast food for her breakfast, her morning snack, her lunch, her afternoon snack, her dinner, and her midnight snack. She is simply addicted …show more content…
One of fast foods main targets is schools and children. According to Corporate Accountability International, “nearly 80% of Chicago schools have at least one fast food restaurant within a half-mile of the school” (Lynn). Fast foods market towards schools because children and students are viewed as easy targets in this industry. Fast foods have many ways of drawing kids in, whether it be the play tubes inside of the restaurant or the newest toy in a McDonald’s happy meal. Fast food companies have also started using a reward system for kids who get good grades or read a certain number of books. For example, at some fast food restaurants students can bring in their report card and if they have all A’s they can receive free or discounted meals. Fast food companies know that habits are formed from a young age and that if they can get kids addicted while they are young, the addiction is much harder to break once they get older. Fast food companies are putting fast food in schools for the same reason. As kids are beginning to be addicted to this type of food, they are forming lifelong eating habits that are extremely unhealthy and that will eventually be the cause of their death. Diseases and sickness will develop at a much earlier age and will cause problems for many kids because they are not getting the nutrients their bodies need to develop due to the fact that they are only consuming fast food foods. In addition, to this students also have extremely busy schedules with school, homework, sports, extracurricular activities, and friends, and they do not have time to go home and cook themselves a full meal. Students result to fast food especially when it is very conveniently placed on their drive home from school. Having an abundance of fast food restaurants in and around schools has children believing that it is okay to consume these types of meals on a regular basis. School systems are negatively influencing

Why are so many young Americans overweight? It’s the parent’s fault. Parents should provide their children with the proper food and exercise they need to grow into healthy adults. In the article, “The Battle Against Fast Food Begins in the Home”, Daniel Weintraub tries to convince the reader that the parents are to blame for not properly feeding their children. David Barboza disagrees with Weintraub saying the food companies are responsible.…

According to Barboza, in 2002 food companies were spending $15 billion and 20 percent of the nation’s schools serve fast food. As of the time this was written and even today legislation has been in the process to fix some of these issues by taking small steps including banning school vending machines. Personally, I have yet to see a school with a vending machine in person, this confirms for me that the school vending machines have been banned for a while now. Kids are more vulnerable to be in contact with fast food if it is sold in a place such as their own school or any place kids would typically be such as parks or shopping malls. It is harder and almost impossible to affect kid’s eating habits when they are in an area surrounded by fast food, but that is why it does matter that a place like a school is affected by these…

When you think of America’s nutrition do you think of fit individuals or do you think of people who abide a lifestyle of unhealthy foods? As the years go by the percentage of America’s obesity population increases dramatically, only making it easier for people to blame the fast food chains. Fast food joints may be on the increase in many neighborhoods and communities across the globe and precisely in America, but they should not be blamed for the rising rate of obesity amongst the children and adults. The reason being due to people’s choice on what to eat and support, neglecting any type of health responsibility, affecting choices of policymakers, and people’s mindset towards being physically active.…

It’s easy to blame kids for getting fat, it’s not like anyone put a gun to their heads and made them eat fast food, but here is where the lack of nutritious information and affordable healthy options come into play. If I’m hungry and the only food options I see on my way home are fast food chains, it’s very likely I will just stop to eat just because of the convenience of having it right there in front of me. Plus, prices and the quickness of service just makes the idea of a hamburger from McDonalds much more appealing than driving around looking for a healthier option that will probably cost more money and effort to find. I agree with Zinczenko that the amount of fast food restaurants in the United States is honestly really ridiculous. The amount of variation of sodas and fast food has become truly unnecessary and given the United States a bad reputation of quantity being more important than…

Nearly 20% of fast food ads now mention a toy premium in their commercials" (Committee on Communications, 2006). I feel like there are different reasons for why the amount of obese people have went up. America is the country full with low income people. The lower the income the less people want to spend and here in America healthy food is not cheap. You can go to a fast food restaurant and order a sandwhich for just one dollar or you could go to a store and get healthier food that will consume most of your money. Most American’s choose fast food because they do not have enough money to go out grocery shopping and buying healthy food like…

But why are all these advertisements focused on the youth? David Barboza, writer of “If You Pitch It, They Will Eat” (2003), quotes Karlin Linhardt, the director of youth marketing at McDonald’s, who professes, “[Children are] the biggest market there is. [...] Kids 4 to 12 spend on their own wants and needs about $30 billion a year” (15). Being the largest, and most juvenile, group leaves them vulnerable to the assertions that fast food companies plant within their minds.…

This is a specific type of advertising, that offers rewards for brand loyalty. This type of promotion factored heavily which caused children to want to attend the quick-serve chains more often than how often they previously used to. Children are more attracted to rewards and toys rather than getting nothing out of visiting the restaurant. I know for a fact that when I was a kid I would want to visit these chains, and eat these meals just so I could get a toy or just so I could say that I went to the chain. This form of advertising brings in children and contributes to the rising rates of child…
