Hay made in reference to the Spanish-American War of 1898(Roark). There are certain events leading up to the war that our Government debated about with regard to getting involved with actions in Cuba. Cuba at that time is a property of the Spanish empire. The battleship USS Maine’s suspicious explosion and sinking in the Havana Harbor, caused most of the country wanting retaliation against Spain.
Expansionist such as Teddy Roosevelt, Assistant Secretary of the Navy, made statements that war with Spain opened up the prospect of expansion into Asia.
