America gives equal opportunities to the people through our sacrifices. In an essay written by John Sidney McCain III, he writes about his experience during the Vietnam War and of the people he met, more specifically, Mike Christian. He states, “Mike had a keen and deep appreciation for the opportunities this country-and our military- provide for people who want to work and want to succeed” (6). Those in the military sacrifice their life each time they are deployed. Not only them, but also our policemen, who put their life at risk every single day to keep our streets safe. Sacrifice is key for building a better life for the youth and others. McCain also describes his time of being a prisoner of war. He explains how Mike had sewn an American flag on the inside of his shirt and how the prisoners would say the Pledge of Allegiance every afternoon because it reminded them of their bravery, courage, and dedication for America. America is not portrayed through selfish acts and McCain highlights this when he writes, “Sitting there, with his eyes almost shut from his beating, making another flag… He was making that flag because he know how important it was for us…” (7).
