Amelie is a Joseph Campbell hero because she sacrifices a life that she knows and is comfortable in; to help others, creating a different type of life that she learns to love. Campbell’s theory also states that there are three steps within the hero’s cycle: departure, fulfillment, and return. Amelie departs from her routine life to fulfill her longing of interacting with people. Amelie then returns to a routine life that is different from the one she lived before but better. She reverts to a life of repetitive tasks however, this time with someone to go through life with by her side, Nino.
The next movie, Pay It Forward, focuses on a young boy who is tasked with an assignment to change the world. Trevor is skeptical of the assignment, but wants to succeed in the class and develops a plan. His plan is to help three people and then in return, those three people have to help three people of their own and so on. There is a line that says, “if you only love your own race/then you only leave space to discriminate” this is empowering because it shows if people cannot see how others view things, then the world cannot get better. In order for the world to be a better place, people have to walk a mile in someone else’s shoes before they judge them. Based on the lyrics, there is nothing saying what anyone has sacrificed to enrich the world. All they are doing is pointing out all of the negative things going on in the world and how it compounds making the world a worse place to live in.
