She bought her own plane and became the 16th woman in the world to get her pilots license. She flew up to a height of 14,000 ft. setting a record for female pilots. Earhart was also the first woman to be flown across the Atlantic in 1928. She placed 3rd in the Powder Puff Women's Air Derby and was the 1st woman to fly across the Atlantic solo. She wrote two books and gave lectures. Earhart founded an organization for female pilots and was vice president of the National Aeronautic Association. Amelia also joined the faculty of Purdue University, was the first person to fly solo from Hawaii to California, and was the first person to fly solo from Mexico City to the East Coast.
