She was the 19th woman to become a Pilate, she was the first woman and second person in total to fly across the Atlantic and Pacific in 1928. Her name was Amelia Mary Earhart and the big question is what happened in those final moments on her mission to fly around the world in 1937, or even where was she on those final moments? Good afternoon, today I will be assessing the different theories relating to the disappearance of Amelia Earhart and navigator Fred Noonan, on her mission (to fly across the world) in 1937.

Amelia Earhart was born on July 24 1897 and was married to George P. Putnam. Amelia Earhart first took flying lessons in 1920 and this is when it transformed her life. Although she wasn’t accepted in society at first, she proved this to be a good decision as she was the first female to fly across the Atlantic in 1928. But in 1937 aged 39, she was to fly around the world, just her and her navigator Fred Noonan. Earhart was advised not go on this mission due to the dangers and risks of things such as the weather. However, she was still determined to conquer this long waited dream.

The reason for their disappearance would be, them not being able to locate Howland Island-where they would re-fuel. We know this as Earhart and Noonan made reports via radio. "TWO EIGHT ONE NORTH HOWLAND CALL KHAQQ BEYOND NORTH DON'T HOLD WITH US MUCH LONGER ABOVE WATER SHUT OFF". However, there were still other radio calls made stating, “We are on the line 157 337 …. We are running on line north and south.” These numbers are relating to the compass headings -157degress and -337degrees and these describe a line that passes through their Destination-Howland Island. Earhart and Noonan going North and South along this line makes sense as they would have been looking for Howland Island. There were other radio calls made but because of the signal, receivers were unable to understand
