Amelia Earhart was born on July 24th, 1897 in Atchison, Kansas. Her parents were Amy Otis and Edwin Stanton Earhart. Amelia’s younger sister, Muriel ,is born in 1899. However, since Amelia was just a passenger, she felt like she really didn’t deserve fame and acclaim. She said she “...was just baggage…”.
In August, 1929, Amelia bought a new plane, called the “Lockheed Vega”. On July 5, 1930, Amelia set the new women's world flying speed record, in which she went 181.18 miles per hour. Amelia sets 7 more women’s distance and speed records, in only 5 years (1930-1935). On February 7th, 1931, Amelia Earhart married George Putnam, the man who helped bring her to celebrity status.
Amelia left Newfoundland on May 20, 1932, and landed in Northern Ireland on May 21, 1932. By doing this she became the first woman to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean. Amelia received the Gold Medal of the National Geographic Society from President Hoover, and became the first woman to ever do this. Amelia became the first woman to fly solo across the North American continent and back, through August 24, 1932, to August 25, 1932. She did this again in 1933, and broke her own flight time record. In 1934, Amelia was given the “Harmon Trophy” for “America's Outstanding Airwoman” for the 3rd year in a row.
