Amelanchier spp. is a native tree found throughout North American that will not only support the local birds with its abundant berries but also be a wonderful addition to any yard. There are a number of cultivars of Amelanchier that, like its species, will grow under 25 feet, and can be trained to be a single or multi trunked. Able to tolerate extreme conditions of heat or cold and a range of soil conditions it will also take some drought but prefers consistent irrigation. It’s considered a full season tree with something of interest throughout the year: a mass of small white flowers in the spring, edible red berries in the summer and a blaze of reddish-orange color in the fall.
