Last season provided more than a fair share of difficulties for the Detroit Lions running back, Ameer Abdullah. Throughout his rookie season, Abdullah was unable to secure the trust of the Lions coaching staff due to a severe case of fumbleitis. His habit of putting the ball on the ground started to create a snowball effect and both his confidence and pride began to slip away each time one his carries resulted in a fumble.
Abdullah fumbled during the loss in Detroit’s 2015 season opener against the San Diego Chargers, and a second and third time during a huge defeat at the hands of the Arizona Cardinals. The running back believes that his problems dropping the ball were more of a mental issue than anything else. Abdullah was almost expecting to fumble the ball and it was evident in the way he played.
He was able to overcome his rookie issues with advice from not only Tomlinson, but Abdullah also spent some time getting to know and learning from former Green Bay Packers running back Ahman Green and Warrick Dunn, who is Abdullah’s personal favorite running back of all time.
While rehabbing from surgery due to a torn labrum in his shoulder that he played through last year, Abdullah spent some time contemplating on some lessons he learned from stories of another amazing athlete, Muhammad Ali, the former heavy weight boxing champion. The time spent reflecting on the champ helped Abdullah to regain his self-confidence and taught him how to trust himself again after his failures throughout his rookie season.
Abdullah’s new found faith in his abilities as a running back have been evident in his play this summer throughout camp. Although he is wearing a red, no contact jersey during training camp, the Detroit coaches are counting on the second year man to lead the Lions ground attack in
