Ambrose Burnside was born near Liberty, Indiana, on May 23, 1824. He was the son of a court clerk and farmer, but had dreams of being in the army. In 1843 Burnside began his journey by receiving an appointment to west point, a United States Military Academy. To say he had a hard time is an understatement. After nearly being expelled several times, he ultimately graduated in 1847 at the middle of his class - 18th out of 38 students.
Burnside began his career in the Army as a Brevet Second Lieutenant, and had his first career engagement in Veracruz, Mexico in the Mexican-American War.
