Blood Imagery In Macbeth Essay

In the play Macbeth William Shakespeare uses imagery to reveal the characters deep dark desires to become greater than those around them demonstrating their undeterred ambition. Shakespeare demonstrates characters ambition by using imagery of Blood, Sleep, Nature, Clothing, and Disguise against Concealment. By using these images it reveals characters ambition and gives the reader an in depth analysis of how each character acts throughout the play.

One example of imagery revealing character's ambition is through imagery of blood. Macbeth demonstrated ambition through blood imagery during his soliloquy, when the blade floating in front of him suddenly has blood on it thus informing him to kill the king. Macbeth says; “And on the blade and dungeon

Duncan demonstrates ambition through imagery of disguise versus concealment once he is talking about trusting Macbeth knowing nothing about him even after giving his the position of a once traitorous thane. Duncan says; “There’s no art/ To find the mind’s construction of the face./ He was a gentleman on whom I built/ An absolute trust”(1.4.12-14). This demonstrates ambition because king Duncan has already been screwed once after picking the original Thane of Cawdor and is already instantly trusting the same position of power with someone else who he knows even less. Macbeth demonstrates his ambition through images of disguise contrasting concealment firstly once he is speaking with lords at the diner table Macbeth says; “Give me some wine: fill full/ I drink to the general joy of the whole table,/ And to our dear friend Banquo, whom we miss./ Would he were here!”(2.4.88-91). This demonstrates Macbeth's ambition because he is acting as if everything is good even after getting his best friend killed. Macbeth is demonstrating how he will go to every extent to keep his crown. The final example of a character showing ambition through imagery of disguise contrasting concealment is with Macbeth after he figures out that the witches have been tricking him the whole time and that Macduff can end it all. Macbeth states; “Accursèd be that tongue that tells me so,/ For it hath cowed my better part of man;/ And be these juggling fiends no more believed/ That palter with us in a double sense,/ That keep the word of promise to our ear/ And break it our hope.I’ll not fight thee”(5.8.17-22). This demonstrates Macbeth's ambition because he is saying that as long as he does not fight Macduff he can get out of there alive even though there is no hope for

Blood, is an essential part of making us human as it courses through our veins and determines if we are dead or alive. Knowing this, William Shakespeare in his play Macbeth, uses the word blood to explore death and to symbolize the power and weakness within humans in both literal and figurative ways. As Macbeth spills more and more blood throughout the play, he transforms from a man who was once rich in honor and his grounded morals, to a man who is fueled only by his desire and greed for control and status. In the play Macbeth, Shakespeare illustrates how Macbeth steals people’s blood for his own selfish desires and dehumanizes himself in the process to expose the evolution and devolution that one experiences from gaining or losing their humanity.…
