Tragedies of the Elizabethan era often explore characters whose most harrowing conflicts originate from dark places within the innermost levels of immoral hearts. As written by the playwright Shakespeare, Julius Caesar considerably displays that traditionally nefarious quality in his characterization. Although, more specifically, Caesar’s tragic flaw is his overly ambitious nature, which eventually becomes the cause for his downfall despite having originally been what had brought him many successes. The character’s tragic flaw manifests itself throughout the play by demonstrating a tale of hubris: while Caesar’s egotism creates envious enemies after his blood, it is undoubtedly Caesar’s own personal actions that are ultimately responsible for…

If someone were to show his true self to the world, letting everyone see his thoughts, fears, and intentions, he would become easy to take advantage of, easily manipulated, by others. This is demonstrated in the play, The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, as many figures find themselves caught up in the plots of others. Facades, treachery, and deceit are all tactics used in manipulation, and without manipulation, the course of history would have changed dramatically. Brutus would never have joined the conspiracy to kill Caesar, and because of that, the second triumvirate would change. In William Shakespeare’s play The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, Shakespeare writes about how deceit, treachery, and facades are used time and time again for conspirators and loyal friends to get what they want. Shakespeare demonstrates how certain personality traits, such as arrogance, fickleness, and a strong sense of honor, can make a person easily manipulated, and through the use of facades, even a person’s most trusted friend can become his enemy.…

Throughout Julius Caesar, Shakespeare uses the actions of Caesar to illustrate the dangers of one person holding too much power. Though Caesar may have originally had good intentions, the potential to gain more power drove him to become corrupt and misguided. It was not until the moments before his death that Caesar realized what his thirst for power had turned him into, and by then it was too late. Like Caesar, there have been numerous rulers within the last few centuries that were influenced by their desire to become more powerful. In Rome Sweet Rome, several different themes could be associated with this play. Although, one theme stood out to me the most: betrayal. This theme is current throughout the play, especially when Senator Brutus, Senator Cassius, and some of the other members meet up to plan Caesar’s death at Cicero’s restaurant. Another way betrayal becomes clear is after Caesar is stabbed, and everyone who was involved all turn against each other to blame his death on someone other than themselves if they got caught. In addition, betrayal is present when Lucy the Intern quits working for Senator Brutus, and starts working for Octavius Caesar.…

Julius Caesar manipulated and bribed his way to gaining political power, specifically the consul of Rome by 59 BC, by becoming popular among the people. He was named governor of Gaul and became a threat to the Senate and Pompey who had already held power in Rome. Caesar became an enemy of the state and made an act of war by deciding to cross the Rubicon river confronting Pompey, a turning point that was the start of a civil war. The sources Suetonius’ “The Deified Julius Caesar” in Lives of the Caesars, Plutarch’s “Caesar” in Roman Lives, and Julius Caesar’s The Civil War each tell of Julius Caesar’s Civil War describing his political manipulation and rise to power involving the famous crossing of the Rubicon.…
