Having been concerned by these events, Sabinus, when he sees Ambiorix in the distance encouraging his men, sends his interpreter to him, Pompey, to say that he will spare him and his soldiers. When talked to he replies, "If Sabinus wishes to discuss with Ambiorix, it is permitted and he hopes what relates to the safety of the soldiers can be had from the people; and that to him no injury will be done, and he gives his faith to that effect." He consults with Cotta who had been wounded, whether it would appear correct to go from battle and confer with Ambiorix; he hoped to be able to triumph respecting his own safety and the soldiers. Cotta says he will not go to an armed enemy, and in that he stands firm.
