Adoption not only is the most humane alternative to abortion, but it also is the second most responsible thing to do aside from actually keeping and raising the child. Adoption not only gives people the opportunity to free themselves from the financial burden of children, but it also allows other people, who are sterile, to be blessed with a child. This act would also give the most net happiness according to the utilitarian point of view. This would also follow Kantian Ethics as well because if we treat people as a means rather than an end, it would be more beneficial to give the child up for adoption. The only ambiguity is if the fetus is actually a person or not, but it does not matter because if people are treated as a means than an end, then the foster parents’ would gain more having the baby than not. In addition to adoption being the better choice, I agree with Michael Tooley on the grounds that it is morally wrong to destroy potential persons. Although I differ on what should be called a potential person I do agree that when one kills a potential person because it robs him/her of the life he/she could have had. I may have some biased views in this area because I know many people who could have been an aborted but were not due to some unforeseen circumstance. All the people I have meet who were in this situation were wonderful people, so by using plain observation, it seems morally wrong …show more content…
For example, by saying it should be illegal that would also mean that those who have been raped would be forced to provide nutrients for the baby until he/she was born. Some say that that would be cruel to the woman and would be a constant reminder of a traumatic experience. This is the only case that I think has a valid and sound argument. I also would not mind if there were some legal leniencies for cases like these because after all the woman never consented. Despite the fact that I understand this occurred, I mentioned earlier, I would still deem a fetus as a potential person. This would cause the baby and her to both be of equal value, it just would not feel morally right to allow the fetus to die. Also it was neither the fetus’s or the woman’s fault on why it got there, but it is solely the man’s fault. This means that the only one who should be punished is the man, while the woman and child should be cared for. Therefore, if the woman was willing to birth the baby and give him/her for adoption, then that would be the best option. Another opposition is what about in cases like cephalopelvic disproportion. If left untreated this could cause either the mother or the baby, and in some cases both to die because of pregnancy problems. Although cephalopelvic disproportion does happen the best alternative in cases like these is a simple C-section. Then finally by making abortion illegal more
